New York: The Spiritual Science Company, 1913. Black and white plates, frontispiece photo of the author. Cloth hardcover. Octavo. [xiv], 231 pages.

Levere, an early female member of the New York Bar, put forth this collection of essays as having been collected from a broad range of historical figures through automatic or spirit writing during seances in her private living quarters. She additionally claims that the included sketches depicting the contributors in life were drawn in the same process.

Spiritualism was immensely popular in the early 20th century and women were thought to be better mediums than men due to their higher moral condition. This dynamic provided women a socially acceptable platform for giving advice and expressing their opinions and insights, all of which might otherwise have been discouraged or ignored. It is likely that Rose Levere capitalized on this situation through this self-published book.

Bound in ribbed maroon cloth over boards with spine and upper board stamped in gilt, top edge gilt. Minor rubs to extremities. Hinges sound. Very good to near fine overall.
