Originally published by Woodson in 1928 and adapted from his "The Negro in Our History." this is a thorough study of the contributions of African Americans and Africans, aimed at students. The emphasis is on the significant impact of the Black race on global history, aimed at giving students an accurate and inclusive historical perspective. This edition is revised by Wesley into the early 1950s.

Woodson founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) and established Negro History Week in 1926, which later evolved into Black History Month. He is considered by many to be the father of African American history studies.
