The Mothman Prophecies
New York: Saturday Review Press of E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc., (1975). First Printing. Hardcover. Octavo. [x], 269 pages.
Noted UFOlogist John Keel's report on his investigations into the bizarre phenomena reported in West Virginia in the months before the tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge into the Ohio River at Point Pleasant on December 15, 1967.
There were sightings of a winged humanoid creature with red eyes, appearances of "Men in Black," strange lights in the sky, and other observations allegedly related to UFOs or the occult. These mysterious apparitions ended with the collapse of the bridge, implying that they were some kind of extraterrestrial or supernatural warning or threat.
The Silver Bridge was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge constructed in 1928. Its collapse during rush hour plunged 31 vehicles into the river, killing 46 people and injuring 9. The official accident report concluded that a fracture in the steel of a single eyebar was the cause of the failure.
Keel's book is the basis for the 2002 film of the same name directed by Mark Pellington, starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney, and Debra Messing.
