Memoirs of the Life of Henry Van Schaack, Embracing Selections from His Correspondence During the American Revolution

Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Company, 1892. First Edition. Frontispiece portrait. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. xii, 233 pages.

This biographical work, compiled by his nephew Henry Cruger Van Schaack, delves into the life of Henry Van Schaack. Born in the Province of New York, Van Schaack participated in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution--in the latter as Loyalist. He was a citizen of Massachusetts during Shay's Rebellion and took an active role in quelling that revolt.

Based on a cache of family papers, these memoirs highlight Van Schaack’s loyalty to the British Crown, his interactions with key figures in the tumultuous span of his life.

Of particular interest is the record of the challenges Van Schaack faced as a loyalist in revolutionary America. His correspondence gives a deeper understanding of the complexities and personal struggles of those who remained loyal to Britain during the American Revolution.

Very good. Bound in burgundy cloth over boards with black border rules to both boards, gilt-stamped spine titles, patterned endpapers. Minor extremity wear, endpapers show slight splitting at inner margins, and a prior owner's card dated Aug. 5, 1892 pasted to front free endpaper. Expertly repaired edge tear to front free endpaper. Overall a bright and sound copy.
