Madman's Drum: A Novel in Woodcuts [Mad Man's Drum]
New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, (1930). First printing. Woodcuts. Hardcover. Octavo. 128 unnumbered leaves.
A stunning copy of the second graphic novel published in America, following "God's Man"--also by Lynd Ward--of the year before.
"Madman's Drum" tells the story of a curse brought to a slave trader's household by his murder of an African man and the theft of a demon-faced drum.
The story is told through 118 uncaptioned woodblock prints. Ward enhanced his efforts in this second wordless novel, resulting in more detailed images, more nuanced characters, and a more sophisticated plot.
Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Just a few edge rubs and some light soil to jacket. One tiny spot rubbed through on fore edge fold or rear jacket panel. Overall bright and tight.
