Madam President-Elect: A Novel (Signed)
New York: Exposition Press, (1956). First Printing. Hardcover. Octavo. 249 pages.
Uncommon 1956 political thriller by an African American writer, involving a female, mixed-race Presidential candidate from Maryland.
The beautiful and poised Mrs. Leta Fortesque Layne of Baltimore is prominent in civic affairs, having served as Maryland's first woman senator. However, she is unaware of her mixed race background until rumors arise following her nomination for President and a death-bed confession by an old family servant of the plantation aristocracy on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Warner's novel explores the fallout in this insightful perspective from 70 years ago.
Inscribed, signed, and dated by Warner on front free endpaper.
Bound in yellow cloth over boards with spine titled in dark brown. Moderate extremity bumps, slight fading along parts of fore edge of upper board and joint on lower board. Slight toning to interior. Binding sound. Jacket has a few edge chips, slight rubs along upper joint and fore edge folds. Overall a very handsome copy of this scarce book.
