Documents, reports, and proclamations generated by the Maryland General Assembly while meeting in Frederick rather than Annapolis during the Special Session of April to August, 1861. This session was called by Governor Hicks to consider Maryland's course following the secession of Virgnia and heavy-handed treatment by the Federal government in passing troops across her soil, arresting state officers and citizens without due process, etc.

The volume includes several documents which are significant in understanding Maryland's secession crisis and individually quite rare, such as: "Resolutions of the General Assembly in Regard to the Relations of the State of Maryland to the Federal Government," "Protest of the General Assembly Against the Illegal Arrest and Imprisonment by the Federal Government of Citizens of Maryland," and "Report of the Committee on Federal Relations in Regard to the Calling of a Sovereign Convention." All are originals printed in 1861.

The General Assembly's special session of 1861 ended quite abruptly in September when numerous members were arrested by Federal authorities, making legislative action impossible due to lack of a quorum.

Very good in a modern green cloth binding with black leather spine label titled in gilt. Scattered mild browning to interior, along with some faint and unobtrusive tide marks in some margins. A sturdy and serviceable copy.
