Maryland's Secession Crisis - Senate Proceedings

Journal of Proceedings of the Senate of Maryland, in Extra Session, April, 1861

Frederick: Beale H. Richardson, Printer, 1861. Cloth over boards. Octavo. 365, 6, 8 pages.

Original record of the activities and votes of the Maryland Senate while meeting in Frederick during the Special Session of April to August, 1861. Governor Hicks called the session in Frederick because Annapolis was then occupied by Federal Troops following the riot in Baltimore on April 19th and he didn't want that to unduly influence the legislature as it deliberated Maryland's course now that her sister state of Virginia had seceded.

The volume includes an Index, Rules and Orders for the Senate, and a brief report on the secret sessions of the Senate on May 1 and 2, all printed at the time.

The Proceedings end abruptly on September 20, 1861, when the Secretary of the Senate, William Kilgour, reports that he and other members of the Senate and House of Delegates were arrested under order of Federal authorities on September 17th. Soon after, he and other officers were released but "a sufficient number of members of the Senate and House were retained in confinement to prevent the assembling of a quorum..." This action was apparently taken to prevent the risk of Maryland joining the Confederacy.

Very good in a modern green cloth binding with black leather spine label titled in gilt. Scattered mild browning to interior, along with some faint and unobtrusive tide marks in some margins. A sturdy and serviceable copy.
