Early Neurologist from Annapolis Debunks Spiritualism

The Physics and Physiology of Spiritualism

New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1871. First edition. Cloth over boards. Duodecimo. 86 pages.

A critical examination of spiritualism through a scientific lens. Hammond explores the physiological and psychological aspects of spiritual experiences from a neurological perspective, aiming to debunk many spiritualist claims of the era.

Dr. Hammond, a native of Annapolis, Maryland, was a military physician and neurologist and served as Surgeon General of the United States Army during the Civil War. He was the first American physician to devote himself entirely to neurology, the author of the first American treatise about neurology, and one of the founders of the American Neurological Association.

A bit of darkening to spine, interior mildly toned. Old prior owner name and notation pencilled neatly on front free endpaper.
