The Life of Thomas Johnson: Member of the Continental Congress, First Governor of the State of Maryland, and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court

New York: Frederick H. Hitchcock, The Grafton Press, 1927. Author's Autograph Edition, #391 of 500. Black and white plates. Cloth over boards. Tall octavo. xii, 517 pages.

Detailed biography of this important Maryland Founding Father. Johnson was a delegate to the First Continental Congress, a commander of the Maryland Militia, and was a close personal and political friend of George Washington. He served three terms as Maryland's first non-Colonial governor, was an ardent supporter of ratification of the U. S. Constitution, and was later appointed to the Supreme Court by President Washington.

This excellent biography of a lesser-known Founding Father spotlights his and Maryland's prominent role in securing American Independence and establishing the foundation of the national government.

This copy bears a pencilled inscription at top edge of front free endpaper indicating that the prior owner traded "my George Washington and Reading Town" for it in 1936. The book named is likely "George Washington and the Town of Reading in Pennsylvania," by J. Bennett Nolan, published in 1931.

Very good. Bound in dark green cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine titles and top edge gilt. Minor extremity rubs, a faint shallow dampstain to top inner margin of several leaves, not affecting content.
