History of the Buccaneers of America

London: Printed by Luke Howard & Sons, for Payne and Foss, 1816. First separate edition. Three engraved maps (2 folding). Marbled paper over boards with leather spine and fore corners. Quarto. xii, 326 pages.

An exciting and accurate account of 17th-century buccaneering around the Americas, written by an experienced seaman. Captain Burney had accompanied Captain James Cook on his second and third voyages in the Pacific. The present work covers the period between about 1630 and 1697, and Burney shows that these pirates were as adept at seamanship and navigation as they were at terrorizing ships and Caribbean ports.

Separately printed from Burney’s “Chronological History of the Discoveries in the South Sea or Pacific Ocean.”

Ref. SABIN 9388.

Early 19th century binding with shallow bumps to extremities with mild rubs to fore corners and spine ends. Some light scattered foxing inside with mild offsetting to folded maps. Front endpaper cracked but hinges sound. Frontispiece map has an old repair with a thin strip of loss. Neat prior owner name at top and bottom of title page. Very good overall.
