The Female Jockey Club, or, A Sketch of the Manners of the Age
New York: Greenleaf, Fellows, and Wayland, 1794. First American Edition. Leather over boards. Sixteenmo.
Charles Pigott was a late 18th century radical British political satirist inspired by the French Revolution. Here he takes aim at the women of British nobility and high society. His earlier book, "The Jockey Club" (1792) rivalled Paine's "Rights of Man," at least in the arousing the ire of the British government. This volume wouldn't have pleased them any more. Despite publishing these works anonymously, the government finally caught up with Pigott. He was put in prison where he contracted typhus and died in 1794.
Bound in calf over boards with red morocco spine label titled in gilt. Edges rubbed, lower board slightly warped, a few worm holes along upper joint. Slight foxing inside, some age toning to some signatures. Hinges sound. Very good overall.
