The Serenity Prayer
New York: The Womans Press, Y.W.C.A., 1933. First appearance in print. Hardcover bound volume. Quarto. 560 pages.
Bound volume of all 12 issues (sans covers) of this monthly magazine of the Y.W.C.A. for 1933. The March issue contains the first appearance in print of the Serenity Prayer, in an article by Winnifred Wygal. The original authorship of the prayer has been debated extensively but is now conclusively attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr in the early 1930s. Wygal worked closely with Niebuhr and her diary from 1932 quotes the prayer and attributes it to Niebuhr.
The Serenity Prayer would be adopted and widely circulated by Alcoholics Anonymous beginning in 1941.
Near fine. Bound in coarse green cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine. Slight extremity rubs. Hinges sound. Interior clean.
