New York: O. S. & L. N. Fowler, 1843. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 260 pages.

The man who greatly popularized the pseudoscience of phrenology in the 19th century here turns his attention to eugenics. Fowler declares in his Preface his conviction that the disposition and mental powers of mankind are innate, and not the product of education. He claims his extensive experience in the practice of phrenology makes him particularly suited to write on the subject of choosing the right mate to produce optimal offspring.

There are extensive discussions of hereditary traits--both physical and mental--of races and even prominent individual people. Provides a view into 19th century thinking on genetics and the nature vs. nurture question.

Very good in original marbled paper over boards with leather spine and fore corner tips. Titled in gilt on red leather spine label. Mild extremity rubs, contemporaneous bookplate and ownership signature, a couple of small holes along joints, and some light foxing inside.
