All About Cookery. A Collection of Practical Recipes, Arranged in Alphabetical Order and Fully Illustrated. Beeton's "All About It" Books

London: Ward, Lock & Co., [c.1870s]. Illustrated with wood engravings. Publisher's decorative cloth. Octavo. viii, 371, [5] pages. Fine, with blue cloth binding decoratively stamped with titles and ornamentation in black and gilt, pale yellow endpapers. Some minor extremity rubs and shallow bumps. Hinges sound.

Book of recipes gathered by Isabella Mary Beeton, author of the highly influential "Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management." Full page period advertisements at front and rear. Text is illustrated with small woodcuts showing various dishes, etc.

Beeton was working on this book when she died from complications of childbirth at the age of 28 in 1865. Originally published the same year by her husband, Samuel Beeton, with a single page, black-bordered memorial to Isabella at the end, which this copy retains.

Samuel Beeton found himself in financial straits and sold his rights in Mrs. Beeton's works to Ward, Lock & Company in 1866. The presence of Beeton's memorial to his wife in this edition marks it as an early one from Ward, Lock & Company. They removed the memorial in later printings to protect their investment in the "Mrs. Beeton's" name, who they wanted the public to believe was still alive and writing recipes and household hints.

An exceptional copy of this important Victorian era cookbook, in the publisher's handsome decorative binding.
