Scarce Memoir of White House Doorkeeper from Lincoln to Roosevelt

Thirty-Six Years in the White House: Lincoln--Roosevelt

Washington: The Neale Publishing Company, 1902. First edition. Photographic portrait plates. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. 176 pages. Very good in original red cloth binding stamped in black and gilt. All edges untrimmed. Spine is somewhat darkened, a few spots of frayed rubbing to joints, some spotting to lower board, and other minor extremity wear. Binding and hinges sound. Interior clean.

Uncommon memoir by one who worked continuously at the White House from Lincoln's administration to that of Theodore Roosevelt. Pendel began as one of four Presidential bodyguards in November, 1864, moving to the position of doorkeeper at the end of December. His memoir is filled with insider anecdotes, including 50 pages devoted to the Lincoln White House.

Pendel held the unique and tragic position of having been on duty at the time of three Presidential assassinations, and describes the news of each reaching the White House and the responses thereto.

This original edition of Pendel's memoir is rather scarce in the marketplace, this being only the second copy we've had in 25 years.

Ref. KRICK 378; MONAGHAN 1386.
