Jo Mora's Fantastic Pictorial Map of Yosemite

Yosemite (Pictorial Map)

[Carmel]: [Jo Mora Maps], 1931 [1949]. Colored map and caricatures. Single sheet. 19 3/4" x 16". Mounted on linen to 19 7/8" x 23 5/8" Fine. Free of noticeable wear. Colors remain bright and crisp.

This is the second colored printing of Mora's famous "carte" of Yosemite National Park. The original version was uncolored and appeared in 1931. It was slightly larger than the two subsequent colored printings in 1941 and 1949, and all three printings have other minor differences in content.

Joseph Jacinto Mora was born in Uruguay and emigrated to the United States with his family when he was 4 years old. He became a talented artist in photography, painting, sculpture, illustration, and more. A true renaissance man. And this is a truly lovely copy of the earliest colored version of his witty and detailed map of Yosemite. Dedicated to the memory of his friend, Stephen T. Mather, first Director of the U.S. National Park Service.
