The Southern Side; Or, Andersonville Prison
Baltimore: Turnbull Brothers, 1876. First edition. Frontispiece map of Andersonville, engraved plates within the text. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. 488 pages.
An attempt to prove "the rectitude of the Confederate Government in its policy toward prisoners of war," by the Chief Surgeon at Andersonville Prison. Dr. Stevenson uses both Confederate and Union official documents to argue, in essence, that the horrendous prison conditions on both sides were the result of the U. S. Government's denial of prisoner exchanges .
Includes an examination of the trial of Andersonville commander, Capt. Henry Wirz, a comparison of mortality rates in Northern and Southern prisons, and commentary on the Exchange Bureau. An Appendix lists the Union soldiers that died at Andersonville, arranged by state and alphabetically by name. There is also some helpful medical data.
A nice copy of this uncommon Confederate account of Andersonville.
