History of Herodotus. A New English Version, Edited with Copious Notes and Appendices, Illustrating the History and Geography of Herodotus, from the Most Recent Sources of Information; and Embodying the Chief Results, Historical and Ethnographical, which have been Obtained in the Progress of Cuneiform and Hieroglyphical Discovery
London: John Murray, 1862. Maps, woodcut illustrations, several fold-outs. Leather and cloth over boards. Octavos.
An attractive mid-19th century edition of Western civilization's founding work of history. Its author, Herodotus of Halicarnassus, was called "The Father of History" by Cicero. The work is a detailed account of the Greco-Persian Wars and their famous kings and battles. Herodotus happily deviates at times into other areas of ancient society, providing a rich mine of cultural, ethnographical, and geographical information as well.
A handsome and impressive four volume set, attractively bound by Root & Son. Top edges gilt, integral ribbon bookmark in each volume.
Overall near fine. Volume I has some rubbing along upper joint, volume II has some evidence of old dampness which manifests as a bit of rippling to endpapers, and cloth on covers. Folding frontispiece map in volume II has some browning and chipping along fore edge but not affecting content. Volume IV has a bit of fading along top 1" of upper board. In all a very sound and appealing set of this important work.
