Alfred Thayer Mahan was America's most important naval strategist at the end of the 19th century. Mahan became world famous with the publication of "The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660–1783" in 1890, but this Civil War naval history from seven years earlier was his first published book.
Ironically, the future naval giant as born at West Point, where his father was a distinguished professor of civil and military engineering. The younger Mahan ultimately obtained an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy through the influence of Jefferson Davis.

Bound in dark blue pebbled cloth over boards with blind-stamped illustration to upper board, and gilt-stamped titles to spine and upper board. Slight rubs at fore corner tips and spine ends, a small rubbed spot about the size of a sesame seed near head of spine. Hinges solid, gilt titles remain bright. A very handsome and sound copy. Near fine overall.
