In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer: Texts of the Principal Documents and Letters of Personnel Security Board General Manager Commissioners, Washington, D. C., May 27, 1954, through June 29, 1954
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1954. Printed wrappers. Octavo. [iv], 67 pages.
This government pamphlet contains letters and reports related to the revocation of the security clearance of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, who had played a major role in the development of the atomic bomb. The primary reason was Dr. Oppenheimer's connections to Communist front organizations, though his personal feud with General Manager of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, K. D. Nichols, has been suspected as the true origin of this action.
Oppenheimer requested a review of the decision but the revocation was upheld, thus ending his work for the U. S. Government. Oppenheimer's case effectively served notice to scientists working in government that dissent was no longer tolerated.
This pamphlet concludes with a letter from noted AEC commissioner, Henry DeWolf Smyth, in support of Oppenheimer.
Bound in tan saddle-stapled wraps, titled in black. Light rubbing along spine, faint dampstain to upper fore corner of textblock. Occasional and unobtrusive underlines in red pencil. Very good overall.
