Tales
Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1930. First edition thus, limited to 1,000 copies. Illustrated by W. A. Dwiggins. Hardcover. Duodecimo. [vi], 495 pages.
A very handsome edition of 22 tales, illustrated throughout by W. A. Dwiggins, who also designed the book under the supervision of legendary typographer William A. Kittredge.
This fine edition of Poe's Tales comes from the Lakeside Press as one of their "Four American Books" published in 1930. Lakeside was the fine press division of the R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company of Chicago, and this project was designed to demonstrate their ability to execute fine printing on par with European presses.
A very nice copy of this landmark in 20th century typography, in original clear acetate dust jacket and red velvet-lined slipcase.
Ref. FOUR AMERICAN BOOKS.
Fine, in very good original clear acetate jacket, in a good slipcase. Book is bound in decorated paper over boards with black cloth spine. Titled and ornamented in gilt on spine, top edge gilt. Acetate jacket has slight yellowing and a short, nearly imperceptible split at mid-spine. Slipcase has browning to closed edges, rubs along joints, chipping along edges of opening, and is bumped along top edge. A very attractive copy of this fine edition.
