Greasy Luck: A Whaling Sketchbook

New York: William Farquhar Payson, (1932). First edition. Sketches by Grant throughout. Cloth over boards. Quarto. xiv, 127 pages. Near fine in a good dust jacket. Bound in coarse white cloth over boards with green and brown decorative stamping, titles in green, illustrated endpapers. Some light soil to exterior cloth, a bit of browning along inner hinges. Dust jacket has shallow edge chips, an old tape repair to top edge of front panel which has browned, tears along fore edge folds expertly mended with archival tissue. Solid copy, very nice overall and quite scarce with the dust jacket.

An excellent visual contribution to the history of whaling. Grant expertly combines strict accuracy of detail with vivacious presentation in the 64 sketches herein. Each full page illustration is accompanied by descriptive text on the facing page that, taken together, weave the whole into a continuous narrative.
