Under Sail to Greenland: Being an account of the Voyage of the Cutter "Direction", Arthur S. Allen, Jr., Captain, to Greenland in the Summer of 1929, together with the Log, letters and other memoranda
New York: The Marchbanks Press, 1931. Limited edition, 1 of 900 copies. Illustrated from black and white photographs. Hardcover. Tall octavo. 91 pages.
Arthur S. Allen, Jr. was an experienced young sailor and student at M.I.T. when he set out on this voyage in June, 1929 with two companions. One of his fellow sailors was the artist and family friend, Rockwell Kent. The voyage is also described by Kent in his book, "N by E," where his description of himself on this trip is more flattering than Allen's of him here.
Tragically, Allen was hit by a car and killed just two weeks after returning home from this voyage, and the present volume was prepared from his log and other papers as a memorial by his father. Illustrated with photographs taken by Allen on the voyage. Color map by Rudolph Ruzicka folds out at rear.
