Report of the Select Committee Relative to the Soldiers' National Cemetery, together with the Accompanying Documents, as Reported to the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, March 31, 1864
Harrisburg: Singerly & Myers, State Printers, 1864. First printing. Frontispiece map, lithographed plan of cemetery. Cloth over boards. Octavo. [1-6], 7-108, [109-111] pages.
An early printing of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, although buried on the second-to-last page of this report to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. The volume includes official reports and correspondence along with the details of the program for dedication ceremony itself. For example, the day's Order of Procession and Programme of Arrangements are both reprinted here. Edward Everett's main oration precedes Lincoln's remarks, which appear by themselves on page [110].
Lincoln's 1863 address at Gettysburg is probably the best known oration in American history. The version of the text reprinted here closely follows the distinct punctuation and paragraphing of the versions in Lincoln's own hand--and differs significantly from the contemporary newspaper transcriptions.
Frontispiece features the Andrew B. Cross map of the battlefield and hospitals, lithographed by Hoen, and William Saunders' tinted fold-out titled "Map of the Grounds and Design for the Improvement of the Soldiers' National Cemetery, Gettysburg, P.A. 1863."
A great addition to any Civil War or Lincolniana or collection.
