Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer

New York: Neale Publishing Company, 1905. First Edition. Black & white frontispiece portrait. Original cloth. Octavo. 315 pages. ***************Near Fine. Bound in gray cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine and upper board titles, blind-stamped border rules to upper board and spine ends. Minor extremity rubs and shallow bumps. Endpapers expertly reinforced with archival tissue along hinges. Very handsome copy.

Scarce first edition of this exceptional Confederate memoir. Sorrel served on General Longstreet's staff, eventually becoming Chief of Staff of the 1st Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. His proximity to Longstreet and other important Confederate commanders put Sorrel in a great position to observe, his mild-mannered nature gave him candor and objectivity, and his narrative skill gave him the ability to record his observations with color and humor. As superbly readable as it is historically significant. Truly one of the essential books in any Civil War collection. EICHER 317; NEVINS I, p. 161; IN TALL COTTON 170; KRICK 466; DORNBUSCH II 3100.
