Personal Memoirs of P. H. Sheridan. General United States Army

New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1888. Engraved frontispiece portraits, plates, fold-out maps. Cloth over boards. Octavos. xiv, 500 and xii, 486 pages. Bound in dark green cloth over boards with gilt-stamped titles and vignettes to upper boards. Spines titled in gilt with gilt and black ornaments. Neat prior owner presentation inscriptions dated 1889 at top of front pastedowns. A few very slight extremity rubs. Hinges sound, no splits to endpapers. In custom-cut Mylar jackets. A fine set, rarely seen in this condition.

A military classic. Sheridan covers not only his early years in the west (like most other Civil War commanders on both sides), but also his experiences in the Indian Wars of the 1870s.

The majority of his superb memoir, however, gives his straightforward descriptions of what he saw and commanded during the Civil War. Sheridan's spectacular campaign to close the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 and his significant contributions to the Appomattox campaign are recounted here.
