The Pre-War Colonies...Which Herr Hitler Declares must be Returned to the Reich...or ELSE!

[Baltimore]: [Ken Magazine], [1938]. Yardley. Approximately 10 3/8" x 13 3/8" Fine condition. Sheet formerly bound into the magazine but centerfold crease does not affect this map.

Anti-fascist map by Baltimore Sun cartoonist Richard Q. Yardley and Peggy Yardley. The map depicts the growing threat of Hitler and Mussolini in Africa, with Hitler shown as an angry sun whose rays point at former German colonies lost in World War I. The four colonies are Togoland, Cameroons, former German East Africa and former German Southwest Africa, all then controlled variously by England, France, and Belgium.

This is just one of a series of anti-fascist maps done by Yardley, and one of the very few to credit his wife, Peggy. This was published in 1938 in the short-lived and controversial anti-fascist Ken Magazine. Ken was founded by the publisher and the editor of Esquire, and Ernest Hemingway contributed numerous articles during its short life.

A vibrant bit of anti-Hitler propaganda on the eve of World War II in the form of one of Yardley's characteristic pictorial maps.
