"The natural role of the twentieth-century man is anxiety."

The Naked and the Dead

New York: Rinehart and Company, Inc., (1948). First edition, first state. One map. Hardcover. Octavo. [vi], 721 pages. Very good in a good dust jacket. Light rubs to tips of boards, touch of browning to textblock edges. Jacke has a 1/2" chip at head of spine not affecting any text, a couple of diagonal creases at top of front panel, and two chips at top of front fore edge fold. There are some expert repairs to three horizontal tears across spine and separation of upper joint fold. Repairs accomplished unobtrusively from backside with Japanese tissue. An attractive copy of this major 20th century novel.

Mailer's first novel, and the first popular novel to come out of the experiences of World War II. An excellent portrayal of the American fighting man in that war, based in part on Mailer's experiences as a cook with the 112th Cavalry Regiment in the Philippines.

The first state of the iconic dust jacket with the lengthy blurb by Stanely Rinehart.
