Gothic Architecture: A Lecture for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society

[Hammersmith]: [Kelmscott Press], [1893]. First edition, third state. Full leather. Sixteenmo. [ii], 68 pages.

William Morris delivered this lecture at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society's second exhibition in 1889 and it was printed, as one of the displays, at the fourth in 1893.

Only the printing was done at the 1893 Exhibition, in a total edition of 1500 copies. The composition and typesetting had been done at Morris's Kelmscott Press in Hammersmith. Text is printed in black and red with initial capitals throughout. This copy is from the last group of 500 copies printed, with the errors on pages 41 and 45 corrected.

This copy was bound in full deep burgundy leather over boards by Cox of Chicago. The spine has five raised bands and is titled, ruled and ornamented in gilt. Top edge of textblock is gilt, and both boards have gilt-stamped borders and floral ornaments, with gilt rules and floral ornamentation bordering both pastedowns on three sides as well. The marbled endpapers have a fantastic swirled pattern around a central vortex.

Ref. LEMIRE A-66.01.

A fine copy.
