Miscellanies (in 3 volumes)

London: Printed for the Author and sold by A. Millar, 1743. First edtion. Half leather and brown cloth over boards. Octavos. [24], xxvii, 354; [ii], 422; and [x], 421 pages. Near fine in later bindings with leather spines and fore corners. Spines have five raised bands with gilt-stamped titles, rules, and ornaments. Top edges gilt. Prior owner bookplate on front pastedown of each volume. Minor rubs and scuffs to extremities. Attractive set.

The first volume contains Fielding's youthful poems and some essays, preceded by a 22 page "List of Subscrebers" (sic) to the edition. The second volume is the first appearance of "A Journey from this World to the Next, etc.," and the third volume is the first appearance of "The Life of Mr. Jonathan Wild the Great." In addition to these noteworthy first appearances, Fielding's "Miscellanies" is important for the minor pieces it collects under Fielding's name, as the authorship of many of these had not previously been documented.
