Beechenbrook; A Rhyme of the War

Baltimore: Kelly & Piet, Publishers, 1866. Cloth over boards. Duodecimo. 94 pages. Rebound in maroon cloth. Gilt title on upper board has dulled. Mild age toning to interior, a few light extremity rubs to binding, else near fine.

This scarce volume of Confederate poetry was originally published in Richmond in 1865, but most of that edition went up in flames when the city fell at the end of the Civil War. This is the second edition, published a year later in Baltimore.

Mrs. Presto's sister was the wife of Stonewall Jackson and her husband served on Jackson's staff. She was the informal Poet Laureate of the Confederacy. Dedication is "To every Southern woman who has been widowed by the war."

Contemporaneous owner inscription of Maria L. Trueheart Taylor (1842-1923).
