New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1910. First edition. Original cloth. Octavo. xlii, 249, [v ads] pages. Very good. Bound in red cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine titles and ornaments, gilt-stamped signature to upper board, top edge gilt. A few light extremity rubs, minor scattered spotting to cloth, bookplate on front pastedown, prior owner name penned at top of front free endpaper. Roosevelt's birth and death years in pen under his name on title page.
Unaccountably scarce book of speeches given by Roosevelt while traveling after he left the White House in 1909. Most notably, this is the first book appearance of "Citizenship in a Republic"-- Roosevelt's deservedly famous 'man in the arena' speech. This address was delivered by invitation at the Sorbonne on April 23, 1910.
The extensive Introduction by Abbott contains interesting information on the circumstances and repercussions of this and other speeches Mr. Roosevelt delivered during his travels.
