The Ball Players Chronicle: A Weekly Journal Devoted to the Interests of the American Game of Base Ball and Kindred Sports of the Field

New York: Thompson & Pearson, Publishers, 1867. Woodcuts. Newspaper. Folio. 12 pages. Very Good. Complete, original 12 page newspaper, removed from a bound volume at some point, with associated sewing holes and minor wear along left edge. Fore edge have a few short tears. Very clean overall.

A lovely issue of the The Ball Players' Chronicle, which was the first periodical devoted to the game of baseball. Its editor, Henry Chadwick, was a great promoter and popularizer of the game and is considered by some to be the "Father of baseball." There is a lengthy section in this issue devoted to the inaugural nationwide tour of the National Base Ball Club of Washington, DC, for which team Chadwick was the official scorer. He created baseball's box score, tracked early statistics, and came up with "K" as the abbreviation for a strike out. Loads of stats in this issue, along with great advertising content.
