Gerrit Smith and the Vigilant Association of the City of New-York
New York: John A. Gray, Printer, 1860. Wrappers. 24mo 5" - 6" tall. 29 pages.
Correspondence related to accusations of libel made by Gerrit Smith against Royal Phelps and Watts Sherman of the New York Democratic Vigilant Association. The dispute arose from the latter publishing a "Manifesto" in which it was alleged that Gerrit Smith had full prior knowledge of John Brown's plan at Harper's Ferry. That Smith was well acquainted with and had supported Brown was not disputed, but Smith denied knowing Brown's plans for a bloody uprising.
Very Good. Small pamphlet with original printed wrappers over a sewn binding. Some light overall soil, covers split along lower 1" of spine.
