Bancroft founded the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis as Secretary of the Navy in 1845. He was also a prominent historian and advocate for secondary eduction in the United States. This is the catalogue of his library of historical manuscripts, etc., accumulated during his lifetime, prepared by noted bibliographer of Americana, Joseph F. Sabin. Inscribed by Sabin to James M. Johnston, executor of Bancroft's estate. The cabinet card photograph of Bancroft carries the back mark of Charles Parker, Photographer, 477 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC. A faint pencil inscription at front lower margin indicates the photograph was taken in the 1880s. The card is inscribed on back to Mr. Johnston from Bancroft's servant, Carl Herrmann Braatz. Following Bancroft's death, Braatz became well known around Washington in the character of Santa Claus for poor children at the Central Mission.. Signed by Author.
