Neihardt had been working on an Epic Cycle of the West for eleven years, having completed two parts prior to this one. "The Song of the Indian Wars deals with the last great fight for the bison pastures of the Plains between the westering white men and the prairie tribes--the struggle for the right of way between the Missouri River and the Pacific Ocean." Neihardt made a conscious effort to neither fictionalize his material nor sentimentalize the characters. Handsomely illustrated by Allen Tupper True. . Signed by Author.
