Scarce biography of this prolific Victorian journalist and writer. "Gath, " as Townsend signed himself, was the youngest war correspondent during the American Civil War. His dispatches from the Battle of Five Forks and the days following Lincoln's assassination drew national attention. He became an important writer during the Reconstruction era. On his estate near the Antietam battlefield in western Maryland he built the War Correspondents Arch, now within Gathland State Park. This is one of 125 copies of this book.
