Most works of Theon of Smyrna were lost, but this important survivor is an introductory survey to Greek mathematics and a valuable compilation of mathematical ideas known to the ancient Greeks. The work includes sections on arithmetic, numerical laws of music, medians and figures, quaternaries and decads, and more. A section on astronomy describes the spherical form of the earth, movements of other planets, etc.
