The Hound of the Baskervilles: Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes
London: George Newnes, Limited, 1902. First printing. Frontispiece and 15 tipped in plates by Sidney Paget. Cloth over boards. Octavo. [viii], 359 pages. Binding has some shallow edge bumps along head and heel of spine, mild abrasions to black silhouette on front panel, and slight bumps to fore corner tips. Spine somewhat sunned. Short closed tear at top edge of half title. Small embossed bookseller stamp, "W H Smith & Son, London," at top fore corner of front free endpaper. Very good overall.
First edition of the third of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels, and widely considered the best. It is the first reappearance of Holmes after his apparent death in the earlier short story, "The Final Problem." The popularity of "Hound of the Baskervilles" sparked a revival of the Sherlock Holmes character.
Laid in at front is a billhead from English bookseller, John Schroder, dated 1953, listing this book and three others sold to a prior owner.
The scarlet cloth binding is blocked and titled in gilt and black in the iconic design by Alfred Garth Jones, with his monogram signature at lower right corner.
