Remembering Lafayette on His 1825 American Tour

Outlines of the Principal Events in the Life of General Lafayette. From the North American Review

Boston: Cummings, Hilliard, & Co., 1825. Marbled boards and leather over boards. Octavo. 64 pages. Fine. Bound in later marbled paper over boards with leather spine and fore corners. Gilt-stamped title to spine, five raised bands, gilt ruling to both boards, top edge gilt. Hint of fading along spine. Protected in a 4 mil Mylar jacket.

This brief biography of Lafayette was published on the occasion of his tour of America in 1825. He had played a significant part in the two most important political revolutions to that time--the American and the French. In the 38 years since had last been in the United States he had passed through remarkable extremes of political fortune, all while holding consistently to his principles. This outline of his life honors and draws inspiration from Lafayette's steadfast character through the incredible highs and lows of his political life.

"We rejoice, too, no less in the effect which this visit of General Lafayette is producing upon us as a nation. It is doing much to unite us...It turns this whole people from the bustle and divisions of our wearisome elections, the contests of the senatehouse, and the troubles and bitterness of manifold political dissensions; and instead of all this, carries us back to that great period in our history, about which opinions have long been tranquil and settled."
