To Beg I Am Ashamed
New York: The Vanguard Press, 1938. First U.S. printing. Cloth over boards. Octavo. [iv], 283 pages.
The authentic autobiography of a London prostitute. Very well written account of London's sexual underworld in the 1930s by a firsthand observer. This work has sometimes been attributed to Graham Greene. It was suppressed when originally published in England, with most of the edition being destroyed. This American edition appeared the same year.
Very good in a very good dust jacket. Bound in blue cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in black. Price-clipped jacket has some browning to spine, a bit of staining to front panel, edge chips to head and heel of spine, and few closed tears. Two tears on spine expertly repaired with archival tissue.
