A rare bit of ephemera from the 1964 U.S. Presidential campaign of Clifton DeBerry. DeBerry was the first African American in the 20th century to be nominated by a political party as its candidate for President of the United States. He was nominated by the Socialist Workers Party, with Edward Shaw as is running mate for Vice President.
Clifton DeBerry was a native of Mississippi but emigrated to Chicago in the 1940s. He became active in unions while working in factories there, and joined first the Communist Party and then, in 1953, the Socialist Workers Party.
The brochure argues that the Democrat and Republican parties are both wrong on major issues of the day, and urges people to vote for DeBerry and Shaw in protest of "the racism in our society, the country's horrifying war program, the slums and poverty which afflict millions, the attack on upon our democratic rights" and "the policies of the two major parties."
