Annapolis: Naval Institute Press, (1984). First printing. Cloth hardcover. Octavo. [viii], 387 pages. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Shallow bumping to heel of spine, faint diagonal line across binding (manufactured in the cloth), and prior owner name on front free endpaper. Jacket has a tiny closed tear and very shallow wrinkle at head of spine, a short diagonal crease at top fore corner of front flap, and a straight vertical crease on each flap and front and rear panel. In all, a considerably more attractive copy than usually seen.
A signed first edition of Clancy's debut novel. This Cold War fiction high spot is CIA analyst Jack Ryan's debut as well, as he plays a hunch that a Soviet submarine captain is trying to defect with his navy's new silently-propelled ballistic-missile sub.
First issue of the first printing of the first edition, with all points present (correct number of lines on copyright page, correct number of reviews in proper order on rear jacket panel, placement of ISBN on binding, proper weight overall, etc.).
A handsome copy, with the late author's straight signature on half title.
