For Whom the Bell Tolls

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. First edition. Octavo. Cloth over boards. Near fine in a good dust jacket. Bound in coarse tan cloth over boards with red and black stamped title blocks and lettering. No prior ownership marks. Jacket has an approximately 2" x 3" triangular chip to top edge of rear panel, affecting a blank area of Hemingway's photograph there. Lesser chips at head of spine and top edge of front jacket panel. Some mild rubs, closed tears. Nice copy in decent first state jacket.

Hemingway's novel of the Spanish American War, and published right after, this is considered one of his best works. A nice first printing of the first edition with the first state, unclipped dust jacket.
