A New Ballad on a Duelling Candidate! Alias,--George the Second
Bentinck, Lord George (1802-1848)

A New Ballad on a Duelling Candidate! Alias,--George the Second

(S.l.): (S.n.), [c.1836]. Broadside. 7 1/2" x 10 1/8" Fine, with some light toning and an old fold crease.

Satirical broadside poking fun at British politician and racehorse owner Lord George Bentinck for his move from the Whig Party to the Conservative Party with the Derby Dilly faction in Parliament. Bentinck represented the King's Lynn constituency in Norfolk and was friends with Benjamin Disraeli.

The dueling reference comes from a betting dispute with Squire Osbaldeston following the Heaton Park races near Manchester in 1835. In the duel, the Squire, who was an excellent marksman, shot slightly high as a result of the startling countdown by Bentinck's second. Bentinck, who was no pistol expert, then deliberately fired into the air.
