The USS Wakefield (former the luxury liner SS Manhattan) was a World War II transport ship that caught fire 200 miles off Halifax, Nova Scotia on the evening of September 3, 1942. This confidential report details the extensive firefighting and salvage operations performed in coordination with the Canadian Navy.
Bears the ownership name and address of USNR Commander Earl C. Palmer, and expert in deep sea towing problems. Palmer has underlined a few parts of the report in red, including the mention of him walking the Wakefield's commanding officer through the towing the stricken ship to port.
Mimeographed sheets printed on rectos only. Final two pages are a brief report on the fire damage the USS Wakefield sustained, by the Supervisor of Salvage.
