Chicago: R. R. Donnelley & Sons Co., 1913. First edition. Frontispiece Portrait of Bishop Claggett. Original full cloth. Octavo. viii, 184 pages. Fine. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with spine and upper board stamped in gilt. A few tiny extremity rubs.
Utley uses Bishop Thomas Claggett's (1743-1816) letters and journals to assemble an interesting picture of contemporary life and thought in the southern counties of Colonial Maryland. His focus is less on the theological discussions of Claggett's day and more on what daily life was like for the Southern gentleman.
Contains some good genealogical information. Text is footnoted with bibliographical and other references.
