Manuscript Document to Engage the Services of Protestant Episcopal Minister Reverend John Stewart for the Year 1786

[Rock Creek?]: 1786. Single sheet, laid paper. Very good. Document is matted and framed and shows age toning, some minor staining at top edge, old fold lines, etc. Not examined out of frame.

The document reads: "We whose names are hereunto subscribed do promise & bind ourselves to pay to the Reverend Mr. John Stewart, his order or assigns, the several sums annexed to our [crossed out word "names"] respective names, in consideration for his services in officiating at Rock Creek Church & in George-town alternately, for one year, as a Minister of the Protestant Episcopal Church, the year to commence the 24th day of December 1786."

The signatures of six subscribers are then put down in a column on the left side of the page, with amounts pledged written in columns to the right. The subscribers are: Thomas Cramphin, Samuel Shekell, John Beall, William Deakins, William Tucker, and Josias Ray..

The church at Rock Creek Parish was established in 1712, and is now the oldest in Washington, DC and one of the oldest in the country.
