Bound in light blue cloth over boards with blue topstain, spine titled and ruled in dark blue. Slightest hint of fading to cloth spine, tiny rubs at spine ends. Jacket has a closed 1" tear at top of upper joint fold, a few shallow edge rubs and wrinkles, and a hint of browning to spine. Not price-clipped.

Gertrude Stein's remarkable memoir of the German Occupation of France during World War II. She remained in France throughout the War and wrote much of this memoir under the noses of the Nazis, and the manuscript was finally taken to America by a war correspondent with the liberating U.S. Seventh Army. This British first edition contains 4 photographs by Cecil Beaton not in the American edition, as well as a final chapter, "Appendix - The Winner Loses."
